Staying Woke

Communication skills are an essential component in the education of engineering students to facilitate not just students’ education but also to prepare them for their future careers.”
- Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007)

Being skilled in communication is just as crucial for engineering students as mastering technical abilities. This is because engineers not only work with machines, computers, or drawings, they also work with people too.

For example:

  • In school, good communication helps students explain their ideas, work in teams, and learn from others.
  • In their careers, engineers need to present their designs, collaborate with clients, and guide teams to solve real-world problems.

Even with exceptional technical expertise, failing to communicate ideas clearly or collaborate effectively can limit success. Therefore, communication is not just an optional skill, but a vital part of building a thriving engineering career.
