Critical Reflection
3.2.1
I’ve also worked on my communication and critical thinking by engaging in peer discussions, seeking feedback, and analysing case studies. These experiences have helped me structure my arguments logically and explain complex ideas in a way that’s accessible to others. Learning to listen and adapt based on feedback has also made me a more effective communicator.
Going forward, I know I need to keep improving. I plan to seek out internships where I can apply what I’ve learned and further refine my ability to explain technical concepts. I’ll also look for opportunities to participate in debates, presentations, and team problem-solving activities to continue challenging myself. By consistently practicing these skills, I hope to build a strong foundation for my future academic and professional success.
3.2.2
One key focus of my research project was presentation skills, an area in which I have always struggled due to nervousness during oral presentations. Through this experience, I have gained a deeper understanding of both my strengths and areas that require further improvement. While I was well-prepared with content, I found that my nervousness sometimes affected my delivery, making it difficult to maintain steady eye contact and project confidence. However, this challenge also taught me that preparation and practice play a crucial role in overcoming presentation anxiety.
One significant realisation was that nervousness often stems from the fear of judgment rather than a lack of knowledge. I noticed that when I focused more on engaging with my audience rather than worrying about making mistakes, my confidence improved. Additionally, I learned the value of structured practice. Rehearsing in front of peers, receiving constructive feedback, and incorporating breathing techniques helped me manage my anxiety more effectively.
Beyond my personal growth, this experience also reshaped my perspective on learning. I used to view presentations as simply a test of public speaking skills, but I now understand them as opportunities to refine how I communicate ideas and connect with an audience. Observing my peers also reinforced that everyone has their own struggles, some might excel in delivery but struggle with content, while others, like me, may be knowledgeable but need to work on confidence. This realisation has made me more empathetic and appreciative of different learning styles.
Going forward, I intend to enhance my presentation abilities by looking for chances to address audiences, whether in formal academic environments or casual gatherings. By gradually placing myself in these situations, I aim to increase my confidence and become more at ease with public speaking. This project has not only aided me in refining my information presentation skills, but it has also transformed my perspective as learning involves not only gaining knowledge but also honing the abilities to communicate it well.
Thank you, Lennon, for this detailed and insightful reflection. While your takeaways warm my heart, I'm also impressed by the ambitious plan for going forward!
